Time and place: Meeting at Caring Society Complex on 23 Sept. 09:00 to 10:30
Co-Chairs. Himanshu Bhatt, Journalist, Penang. Eric Britton, EcoPlan, Paris.
Invited participants: Representatives of local and national press, radio, television, bloggers, discussion lists, social media, crowdsourcing, and others as identified. Video and filmmakers. Podcasters. Students and schools of journalism/media/communications
Media Event/Agenda: After years of limited interest on the part of the media in the challenges of sustainable development and sustainable cities, in the last several years that has started to change. Increasingly the media at the leading edge is redefining its role and contributing as an active partner in the push to a sustainable planet and sustainable lives. To discuss this in the context of Penang:
- Introduce the pioneering two-week collaborative project Sustainable Penang: Toward a New Mobility Agenda to local and national media.
- Discuss the role of the media, old and new, in leading the transformation to sustainable cities.
- Meet and interview the team behind the project
Focus Group objectives (general): Meet with specialized discussion partners to see if we can together (a) put our fingers on some of the outstanding problems and patterns presently holding Penang back from being among the leading cities when it comes to sustainable transport. And (b) to draw attention to recent initiatives that are getting positive results. Against this backdrop (c) each focus group is being asked to identify one or more low-budget New Mobility Initiatives in their specialty area: measures that can be planned and implemented before December 2014. We aim to identify at least 20 such projects, and (d) in each case associate the project with an implementation plan and responsible implementation partner. The results of these initiatives will (e) be monitored for progress over 2014 and (f) presented to the planned 2015 Penang Conference on Implementing Sustainable Transport in Smaller Asian Cities.
